About the Band

Within their first year this alt-pop powerhouse has been featured in a commercial for MTV2, was voted nextbighit.com’s #1 new band four weeks running, posed for Italian Vogue's music issue, and appeared in the hit internet sitcom, The Burg.

The creation of music producer "Turbo" Robbie Norris and Seth Misterka / Jennifer DeVeau of the popular Brooklyn based electro-punk band Dynasty Electric, the SEXY CHAMPIONS caught their first break when MTV Director Jessica Burstein cast Misterka and DeVeau for a MTV2 commercial promoting local music. The spot created an immediate buzz for the nascent band. Who were they and what was their music about? At this point, they hardly knew the answer themselves. They quickly launched Sexychampions.com and Myspace websites where they hung up ruffs of their tunes Explode and What You Want, which they also entered in Nextbighit.com’s weekly new band competition. To their surprise, they repeatedly nailed down the contest’s #1 slot, and venues started approaching the band about gigs.

This was all great, but SEXY CHAMPIONS was for all practical purposes still only half a band. With a wealth of local talent to draw from, Jeremy Wall (sax/keys), Gabe Fonorow (bass), and Tiffany Almy (drums) completed the lineup. The CHAMPS could now begin to gig. Notable performances at major Williamsburg venues Northsix and Galapagos followed. Somewhere around this time, producer Rick DePofi of NY Noise (The Wreckers, Michelle Branch, Joan Osborne) caught the band at a feverish performance at Headroom Productions’ weekly music showcase and agreed to produce the band.

The result is the four-song SEXY CHAMPIONS promo ep: raw/polished, sassy, smart and stylish radio-friendly Alt-pop with a nod to70s/80s New Wave icons. Hey, it’s not just hype, check out what the press has had to say:

… a pop jem in the waiting. Jennifer DeVeau's sexy swagger and sassy good looks are enough to get your attention. When she sings she instantly reminds me of a younger, sexier version of Chrissie Hynde. -Crashiin.com

… punk goddess Jennifer DeVeau soaks her vocals with a fem-rock attitude that hasn't sounded relevant since the late '70s. Between her Chrissie Hynde hairdo and her dissonant sass, which is reminiscent of Pretty Girls Make Graves' Andrea Zollo, DeVeau appears destined to become a pin-up girl for a new generation of indie hipsters.- Philip Stone / Splendid

Here's a hilarious commercial with way too much word play to leave alone. Placing the words "Cox," "rise" and "sexy" all in the same 30 seconds along with an over sexed Bio teacher just, well, rocks MTV2 style...- AdRant
